Historical Note:

Avern B. Scolnik was born in New York city on November 18, 1895, studying the violin as a boy and also attending the New York public schools.  He graduated from New York University's School of Music (1914) before coming to Chicago where he obtained his L.L.B. degree from DePaul, supporting him self with his violin.  He was admitted to the bar in Chicago in 1917.  He served in the military in 1917-18 and then began the practice of law.  He served as an assistant state's attorney and then built up a private practice. 

Scolnik also was a notable amateur musician, performing in the Chicago Business Men's Orchestra.  Music too led him to his spouse, Chicagoan Amy Neill, a noted violinist.  Both possessed valuable 18th C. Italian violins.
