Historical Note:

Leighton B. Morse, born in Iowa County, Iowa January 14, 1882. He appears in a photo of the Williamsburg Silver Band, organized in 1894, in a website of Iowaa County history.  He obtained a Ph.B. fom Grinnell College, Iowa, in 1903 and a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 1908.  An instructor in Physics at Columbia in New York from 1908 to 1918, technically, he was Visiting Professor of Physics at Lake Forest College in the academic year 1916-17.  According to the 1921 edition of American Men and Women of Science he was on Columbia's staff by that time (492). 

He had attended Grinnell when lake forest's president, John Schott Nollen (1908-18) was teaching there, and this connection no doubt led to his coming to Lake Forest for that year, 1916-17.
