Stevenson, Kathy | Lake Forest College Archives and Special Collections

Name: Stevenson, Kathy

Historical Note:

Kathy Stevenson's writing career spans a quarter century, with five years writing a newspaper column in southern California--the source of her first book, Second Thoughts (Honolulu, HI: Mauna Loa Pub., 1991).  In 1993 she moved to Lake Forest, and eight years later, at the time of the publcation of her first novel, The Lake Poet, she had also won two prizes in the 1998 and apparently 1999 North Shore [Chicago] Fiction Contest, of the Pioneer Press newspapers.  In 1998 she was the inaugural first prize author of "Click," published in the papers including the Lake Forester on May 7, 1998.  The contest for less than 3,000-word short stories had drawn two hundred and thirteen submissions from two-hundred and eight submitters.  In the second contest, 1999 (?), she won second prize for her story "First Snow."  A sidbar publshed with "First Snow" said that she was at work on a novel.

The sidebar reported that having been then a free-lance writer for sixteen years, she was the author of some three hundred essays, short stories and articles published in national and local magazines and newspapers (Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor).  Her start was attrributed to her co-editorship of her high school newspaper in Golden, Colorado.

Her novel The Lake Poet (Lake Forest: Thirteenth Angel Press, 2001) is set in Lake Forest from 1929 to the end of the 20th c.    Soon after publication of The Lake Poet she left the local area, and has been living in Vermont, married to writer Joseph T. Cox and enrolled in the Creative Writing program at Bennington College.  In 2010 she published on Kindle (Amazon) a third book, death, Divorce, and Other Tales of Women's Liberation.
