Gayle, Carol | Lake Forest College Archives and Special Collections

Name: Gayle, Carol

Historical Note:

Carol Gayle, on the Lake Forest College faculty since 1966, has served in many full and part time capacities at the College, both teaching and administrative.  As a lecturer in history with a specialty in Russian, she has taught and in the 2000s also served as chair of the department.  Since the mid 1970s, and at first in association with the late Professor of History Arthur Zilversmit, she has run the College's modestly scaled Continuing Education program for non-traditional-aged students, out of which grew in 1976 under Zilversmit the Master of Liberal Studies program, the first one accredited as such in the Chicago region.

In addition for deans of faculty and presidents she has done special projects, including North Central Association self-studies and visits for re-accreditation, oversight of named lectureships, and nominations for graduate fellowhips (Fulbright, Rhodes, etc.).  Her files reflect this diversity of assignments.  Though officially retired, Professor Gayle continues to serve in Continuing Education and some teaching.

Ms. Gayle's B. A. degree is from Swarthmore College and her M.A. in history is form Columbia University.  She currently is associate profressor of history and associate director, Graduate Program in Liberal Studies.  Her most recent book, 1998, is Cast Iron Architecture in America... (W. W. Norton).  For more, see her biography at https://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/faculty/gayle/
