Historical Note: Eisen is best known for as a designer of illustrations and vignettes for books, including La Fontaine's Fables (Amsterdam, 1762), Ovid's Metamorphoses (1767-71), and the Baisers of Dorat (1770). The son and student of Fraans Eisen, Valenciennes, young Eisen went to Paris and studied also with Le Bas. His personality is credited with gaining him admission to the Court and receiving commissions as a painter and sketcher for the King.  He also instructed Madame de Pompadour.
