Whiting, Paul (fl. 1970s-early 1980s) | Lake Forest College Archives and Special Collections

Name: Whiting, Paul (fl. 1970s-early 1980s)

Historical Note:

Paul Whiting was born in 1937. He was a photographer, 517 E. Scranton, Lake Bluff, when he sold to Gayle Dompke in two main broups, 373 8 x 10 b & w prints (A group, 286; B group 87) plus 87 negatives, for the second lot.  There also are Whiting photos among those in the Susan Dart collection on Lake Forest and Market Square, Howard Shaw and his home Ragdale, 1230 N. GBR.  Mr. Dompke reports that Whiting moved away soon after.

Whiting's photos of many local estates done ca. 1979 record the community on the eve of the "Reagan Revolution" that created new wealth with dramatically lower income taxes, the first such major change since the early 1930s; no new wealth generally had been created since the 1920s.  The next few decades saw many of these places (houses, landscapes, gardens, outbuildings) restored, others moved .  Some of the photos come from books, notably the Deerpath Hills Estates "brochure" (folio), from ca. 1929.  Whiting also labeled in detail with the best information available at the time.
