Hentz, Ann Louise (c. 1922-2007) | Lake Forest College Archives and Special Collections

Name: Hentz, Ann Louise (c. 1922-2007)

Historical Note:

Professor of English, Lake Forest College, Ann Louise Hentz graduated with honors, Phi Beta Kappa, etc. from the U of Rochester in 1950, received her M.A. in 1951 and her Ph.D. in 1956, then joining the Lake Forest College faculty.  She retired in 1986.  She died in 2007.  She published articles including one in  Contemporary Poetry (Fall 1982) on local award-winning poet Lisel Mueller, leading to a continuing to this day relationship between the poet and Lake Forest College.

Hentz never published a book, alas, though she created three promising manuscripts: (1) Memoirs of Wlliam Henry Fox who was dir. of the Brooklyn Mus. of Art, 1913-34, about early 20th C. art, according to a 1985 vita of hers (2) Cross Currents of Art: Modern American Poems Ab out Painting , a work ahead of its time in many ways--as a work of ekphrastic poetry and one that called for access to images a couple of decades before the internet would have made it possible to link online the works to her discussions of the poems based on them., and (3) her short typescript (17 pp.) on poet Sylvia Plath's copy pf the 9th ed. of The Varsity Handbook (1955), an undergraduates' guide to Cambridge that Plath annotated early in her year there and near the time she met Ted Hughes, her future spouse.  Our two collections relate to the second and third of these items (the location of the Fox memoir is not known).
