Historical Note: Hopkins was president of Willliams college, western Massachusetts.  His ties to Lake Forest included his relationship with and advice to William Bross in the 1850s (see his correspondence with Bross, http://collections.lakeforest.edu/items/show/6328 ) and also his having tutored--along with his own daughters--Eveline Smith (Mrs. Charles B.) Farwell, considered to be the re-founder of Lake Forest University/College in 1876, along with her eminent statesman husband.  Eveline Smith ent on to be a teacher in pioneer woemn's seminaries in Pittsfield, New York state and Chicago (Dearborn Academy) before marrying Farwell and with him having three daughters and a son who attended the Lake Forest Unviersity related schools--Ferry Hall (women's seminary), Lake Forest Academy, and Lake Forest College.
